Each player is randomly allocated a role as either a ‘crewmate’ or an ‘imposter’ (pretending to be a crewmate). The crewmates’ mission is to complete tasks and correctly identify the imposter(s). Imposters try to sabotage the mission and eliminate other players.
Among Us is a multi-player game and includes chat. There is an offline single-player mode called Freeplay. A player can play privately with friends or join public games. They can also purchase additional items to change the appearance of their character or crewmate.
On some platforms, Among Us can be played with a guest account (meaning you don’t need to create an account to play). If a child states that they are aged under 13 when they sign up to play the game, they may need to share their parent/guardian’s email address.
Some safety settings are available including the ability to decide whether to receive friend requests and game invitations. A player cannot turn off chat altogether but they can block and report people and filter out inappropriate comments.
Parents of under 13s can set up a child’s account and manage permissions such as whether the child can use free chat rather than the default ‘Quick Chat’ for under 13s (which uses only pre-written phrases). Parents can also control whether their child can invite their friends to play and if they can create their own (visible) user name. There may be additional safety settings on the platform used to play the game such as iOS.
