As a founding partner of The Climate Group’s 24/7 Carbon-Free Coalition, alongside the likes of Google and AstraZeneca, the company aims to share knowledge on how organisations can move to cleaner energy.
The Coalition, launched on 24 September 2024 at Climate Week New York City, will see partner organisations work together to show the benefits of adopting 24/7 carbon-free energy and explore innovative approaches to measuring and reporting energy use.
Vodafone has been a member of The Climate Group’s RE100 initiative since 2018. The company has powered its network with 100% renewable electricity since 2021, using Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and renewable energy guarantees of origin (REGOs).
Tackling the transition: Vodafone UK’s Carbon Reduction Plan
2023 was the warmest year since global records began and climate-related catastrophes are on the rise. Amid this worrying context, Vodafone UK’s Chief Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Officer, Nicki Lyons, explains the importance of the company’s new Carbon Reduction Plan.
While PPAs constitute an increasing portion of Vodafone UK’s energy supply, there is more industry can do to collectively accelerate the full decarbonisation of energy grids as global demand for electricity continues to grow.
Reaching 24/7 carbon-free energy grids is complicated, and there is no precedent to follow. However, a fully decarbonised energy grid is a necessary step if the UK is to achieve its 2050 net zero target.
Vodafone’s membership of the new coalition will see it join leading organisations to learn about and explore the topic in more technical detail.
In turn, supporting early-stage industry discussions around the methodologies and technologies needed to support corporates in taking their first steps towards 24/7 reporting.
Reduce, Reuse, Refurbished: second-hand behaviours on the rise
If 50% of Brits switched to a refurbished device in 2024, an astonishing 63,750,000kg of carbon could be saved, enough to power the equivalent of 88,174 family homes across the UK for a year.
Nicki Lyons, Chief Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Officer, Vodafone UK, said: “We are delighted to join the next iteration of The Climate Group’s work around clean energy procurement and excited to learn from and collaborate with the other partner organisations.”
