Vodafone customers travelling on London Underground are starting to receive a 4G signal at three Tube stations on the Central Line.
The switch on of Vodafone 4G between Holland Park and Queensway on the Central line, means customers will be able to stream and connect on the platform, in the ticket halls, and even in a tunnel. Meanwhile 4G will also be switched on between Kentish Town and Archway on the Northern line in the coming week.
The stations are the latest to go live with Vodafone 4G already available to customers using the Jubilee Line from Westminster to Canning Town. Other stations, including the busy Oxford Circus, Tottenham Court Road and Camden Town are planned to go live early in the new year.
By the end of 2024, all London Underground and the Elizabeth line stations – including platforms and the tunnels – will receive 4G as part of a partnership with Transport for London (TfL) and BAI Communications. Vodafone also plans to introduce 5G to all stations as part of the partnership at some point in the future.
The Deputy Mayor for Transport, Seb Dance, said: “Today marks a great step forward in the delivery of mobile connectivity on the Tube, as Londoners will now have increased access to high-speed mobile coverage when travelling through more Tube stations.
“The Mayor pledged to Londoners that he would deliver 4G throughout the Tube network as part of his commitment to building a better London for everyone – and I have no doubt that this expansion of coverage will help transform journeys for millions of passengers.”
Andrea Dona. Vodafone’s UK Network Director, said “The arrival of 4G at these Tube stations will make a huge difference to our customers who want to be able to use their mobile while travelling at these stations. It’s also an important step to ensuring that the UK has the world-class digital infrastructure it deserves.
“We look forward to seeing more stations going live across 2023 and hearing more about the benefits it brings, both to our customers and to the capital.”
BAI Communications, which is operating the 4G network on behalf of TfL, is responsible for similar networks on public transportation in Hong Kong, Toronto and New York.
