The concept of spring cleaning may date back centuries but, today, a very modern phenomenon is gaining traction at this time of year.
Between electronic devices and their chargers, UK households are currently hoarding 880 million unused electrical items, according to new research by Material Focus.
At almost 21 million units, mobile phones are the third most hoarded item on this list, topped only by small household items such as irons, clocks, headphones and remote controls.
If you’re spring cleaning your own collection of unwanted phones, here are some options on what to do with them.
1. Repair
The best way to prevent electronics from becoming e-waste is to extend their lifespan, since repairing – rather than replacing – can cut the e-waste cycle off at its source.
To help with this, Vodafone recently launched the UK’s only Lifetime Service Promise. Phones bought on a Vodafone EVO plan now come with Battery Refresh and Lifetime Warranty.
As a result, both new and refurbished phones can now last longer, at no extra cost.

You can do things with an old computer that you never imagined, so the last thing you should do is just throw it away.
2. Recycle
If it really is the end of your old phone’s life, then we have some good news: it’s now easier than ever to recycle your old mobile phone.
There are a few ways you can do this. Simply take your old tech into one of our retail stores, where staff will be happy to help.
Alternatively, try Trade-in. You can either get money off your airtime bill or credit in your Vodafone account to use against the cost of a brand-new phone.
3. Donate
Finally, if you’re feeling charitable, then your third option is to donate the old tech that is taking up space in your house.
Launched in 2020, Vodafone’s Great British Tech Appeal gives your phone a whole new purpose. With the support of our various charity partners, we clean up, rebox and rehome your donated tech to someone in need – along with six months of free data, calls and texts.
By doing so, we’ve collected more than 20,000 devices, donating to 13,000 people in need – and counting.
